Chapter 1

"Five-two-eight-nine-nine reporting for repairs."

The voice, muffled by the huge steel door, sounds exactly the same as all the others before it. There wasn't even a hint of emotion in the voice, something that I desperately long for.

I press a button on the console in front of me. The machinery whirs to life, lifting the heavy door up. A sound that I am so familiar with, I hardly notice it anymore. The door clangs to a stop as a blonde male steps into the room.

"I need a battery replacement," he declares in the same monotone as before. The door rolls down behind him and reunites with the floor.

"Sit."

Obediently, he walks steadily to the contraption in the middle of the room and sits in it. His particulars flash up on the screen in front of me as the scanner works its way up his body.

"Scanning complete." The computer beeps twice. I hit a button. Five-two-eight-nine-nine is slowly lowered to a lying position. I hit another button and the contraption starts to remove his battery from the middle of his chest. All the while, he stares blankly ahead, like everyone else before him.

I pick my coffee mug up and sip, savouring the strong taste as I wait for the replacement to be completed. Looking around the small room, I only confirm what I already know. My table with my elaborate computer setup in this corner, the closed door in the corner to my right, drawers and shelves containing various uncompleted and work-in-progress projects lining the walls, the sharp bright ceiling light plates and, of course, the Relovolt V.15 in the middle.

Every day, I am trapped in this place.

Every day, I am alone, with no human contact at all. Unless the humanbots, as I call them, count, but I know they're just empty husks of nothingness.

"Repairs complete." The beeping of the computer halts my train of thoughts, the thoughts that haunt me all the time. I release Five-two-eight-nine-nine and open the door. Without a word, he exits the room and it is like nothing happened at all.
